Plateau State's controversial life pension bill has sparked widespread outrage, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), civil society organisations (CSOs), and concerned citizens rejecting the proposal as self-serving and insensitive. The bill, sponsored by Eli Ankala, aims to grant pensions and retirement benefits to former Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Principal Officers, and members of the Plateau State House of Assembly, despite the state's economic and security challenges. This has led to a potential siege on the Assembly complex on July 30 if the bill is not withdrawn.
The bill's passage has been criticised for its timing and focus. Leaders of the NLC, TUC, and CSOs allies have hinted at a siege on the Assembly complex, accusing lawmakers of pursuing personal interests. The Minority Leader of the House, Dewan Gabriel, publicly distanced himself from the bill, stating he neither initiated nor supported it. The NLC's Eugene Manji accused lawmakers of wasting time on self-serving legislation instead of addressing the state's pressing issues.
CSOs have demanded the suspension of the bill, arguing that Plateau State requires policies promoting economic growth and strengthening public services. The Youth Initiative Against Violence and Human Rights Abuse's Jacob Pwakim and the Civil Liberties Organisation's Steve Aluko condemned the bill, highlighting the disconnect between elected representatives and the people they serve. Professor Chris Kwaja warned against the bill, fearing it could encourage kleptocratic rule.
The bill's opponents argue that public confidence in the legislature depends on fiscal responsibility and prioritising legislation that addresses immediate needs. As public opposition grows, the fate of the bill hangs in the balance, with the NLC vowing to mobilise against it and CSOs urging Governor Caleb Mutfwang to withhold assent. The controversy underscores the political sensitivity of the proposal and the need for public scrutiny.
